NAfME R Session

OPTION 1 (Recommended for today) — Use the cloud-based tutorial at this link: https://posit.cloud/content/12901867

OPTION 2 (Recommended for any other time): Work from your own machine by following these instructions:

First: You will need to install two programs on your computer — R and R Studio — and you can download them here:

• R (version 4.4.2 named “Pile of Leaves”)
  • MAC
    • https://cran.r-project.org/bin/macosx/
  • Windows
    • https://cran.r-project.org/bin/windows/base/

• R Studio (Desktop, not “cloud”)
  • This is a program that you will use to work in “R”, working in “R” directly is much less user-friendly
  • MAC and Windows versions can be found on the same page (scroll down)
  • https://posit.co/products/open-source/rstudio
    • Click Download RStudio in the top right

• You will also need to download the “R script” file titled:
  • “R_tutorial_NAfMER_Miksza.R”
    • Save it in a new folder on your desktop with a name you’ll remember, maybe “NAfME2026_R”

Second: You’ll need to open the R file: “R_tutorial_NAfMER_Miksza.R” by doing this:

• Open R Studio
  • Go to “File” to “Open File”
    • Find the “R_tutorial_NAfMER_Miksza.R” file in the folder you made on your computer and open it
      • It should open in the upper left-hand panel of R Studio

Third: You’ll need to follow the instructions in the “R_tutorial_NAfMER_Miksza.R” file:

• This should result in the tutorial opening up from R studio into a new window
• Maximize the size of the window so you can see the table of contents along the left hand side
